[[News No 1.]] Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group, has bought a 27.5% stake in Aroon Purie-controlled Living Media India, the publisher and owner of India Today magazine and Aaj Tak television channel.

Birla will use his personal money to invest in the New Delhi-based group, which straddles the entire media chain, from television to magazines to tabloids.

A statement from the metals-to-retail group said Birla has agreed to join the Living Media group as a financial investor. It did not specify the price for the deal or the valuation.

However, investment bankers close to the transaction said the deal has been finalised for Rs 600-700 crore, valuing the media group at Rs 2,400-2,800 crore. Mumbai-based investment bank Ambit Corp was the advisor to the deal.

This is the second big investment by an industrialist in the media space. In January, affiliates of Reliance Industries agreed to buy a large stake in the companies of Raghav Bahl, the promoter of Network18 and owner of channels such as CNBC-TV18 and CNN-IBN. The investment was worth over Rs 1,500 crore.

TV Today is listed on the stock exchanges, but it is not clear whether Birlas personal investment companies will now have to make an open offer to buy 26% from public shareholders.

The financial investment also marks the realisation of Kumar Mangalam Birlas cherished dream of owning a media company.

The media sector is a sunrise sector from an investment point of view. I believe that Living Media India offers one of the best opportunities for growth and value creation, Birla said in a release.

Birla made an unsuccessful entry into the entertainment space by launching a movie and TV production company, Applause Entertainment, in 2003. The company, which produced the acclaimed movie Black , was closed down in 2009 after the downturn in the entertainment industry sparked off by the global recession.

Living Media will use the cash from the deal to expand its presence in media. It may now look at launching its New Delhi-based tabloid, Mail Today, in other metros, including Mumbai, according to persons close to the company.   [[News No 2.]]The historic initial public offering of Facebook Inc did not go as planned on Friday, as the social networking companys sky-high valuation combined with trading glitches left the stock languishing near its offering price at the market close.

Facebook shares began trading late Friday morning and opened 11% above the $38 offering price, but after peaking at about $45 slid rapidly at the end of the day to close at $38.23. The IPO was the third-largest in US history and valued eight-year-old Facebook at $104 billion.

The surprisingly weak debut of a stock that analysts had predicted would climb between 10 and 50% is not likely to dent the business prospects of Facebook, which boasts 900 million users and is upending business practices and social relationships around the world.
But the unexpected developments were a clear setback for Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter on the deal, which sources said was forced to defend the $38 price level by buying shares on the open market. Many market participants said they expected the stock to remain under pressure next week.

The offering also proved an embarrassment for the NASDAQ: the opening was delayed as the exchange struggled with a huge volume of orders, and for much of the day there were long delays in order confirmation. The SEC said late Friday that it was reviewing the situation.

Social media companies and Internet companies that had hoped to benefit from a Facebook halo effect were instead dragged down Friday, with social gaming giant Zynga  dropping almost 15%.   [[News No 3.]]After NTPC, now Coal India is mulling exiting International Coal Ventures Ltd (ICVL), the special purpose vehicle formed to acquire coal mines abroad.

Informally CIL has said that it wants to quit ICVL, but the Coal Ministry has not received any proposal from CIL on the same, a source in the Coal Ministry said. However, he did not give the reasons for the exit.

A source in CIL said, Coal India Ltd (CIL) was not just mulling exiting ICVL, but is one step ahead.
When asked for the reasons for exit, they said CIL does not find any benefit in the venture.
     
When contacted, ICVL Chairman C S Verma said, I have not received any such communication and I donot think that the PSU firm will quit ICVL.
     
ICVL, a joint venture between companies like SAIL, CIL, and NMDC--incorporated in 2009--was conceptualised by the Steel Ministry for securing much-needed coking coal and thermal coal assets in overseas territories.
     
Last year, NTPC wished to exit from the consortium. NTPC had made a presentation to the power ministry stating that the coal requirement of NTPC and steel firms are different. NTPC needs thermal coal and RINL coking coal, there a is clash of interest. an NTPC official had said.
     
ICVL, which has Rs 10,000 crore authorised capital and Rs 3,500 crore equity capital, has not been able to taste success since its formation.
   [[News No 4.]]Speciality Restaurants $34 million initial public offer received bids for about two-and-a-half times the number of shares on offer on the last day of the sale, exchange data showed on Friday.

Investors bid for more than 25 million shares of Speciality Restaurants, which was offering about 10 million shares in the IPO that opened on Wednesday, according to data on the National Stock Exchange.

Speciality, which runs popular food chains such as Mainland China, Oh! Calcutta and Sigree, was selling the shares in a price band of Rs 146-155 apiece.

Kotak Mahindra Capital was the sole bookrunner for the Speciality Restaurants share offering, which came two weeks after Samvardhana Motherson Finance withdrew its $311 million IPO due to poor investor response.
