[[News No 1.]]The markets ended weak on the back of weak global cues amid soaring inflation with the benchmark index slipping 343 points to 16,737 levels. In broader markets, the Nifty ended at 4,982, down nearly 100 points.
Inflation for the week ended 26 April stood at 7.61% as against 7.57% a week ago. Oil prices that surged past $125 a barrel, lifted by speculative demand amid tight supplies were another cause for worry.
Back home, ACC, TCS Limited, Reliance Energy, HDFC, Hindalco and BHEL were the top losers among the BSE 30 scrips. Profit booking was also visible in Jaiprakash Associates, Ambuja Cements, Infosys Technologies, ONGC, NTPC and HDFC Bank.
Among sectoral indices, the BSE oil and gas index was the worst hit that lost 4.7% by close of trading session. Reliance Petroleum, Aban Offshore, Cairn India, Reliance Natural Resources Limited and GAIL India were the key losers in this space.
PSU oil refining and marketing companies – Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Indian Oil Corporation also ended weak. The rate matched a median forecast of 7.61% in a Reuters poll of analysts. It was the highest since an annual reading of 7.68% on 13 November 2004.
The annual inflation rate was 6.01% the corresponding week of the previous year.
The wholesale price index is more closely watched than the consumer price index, which is published monthly, because it covers a higher number of products and is published weekly.   [[News No 3.]]Indiabulls Real Estate Ltd plans to invest Rs10 billion to expand its retail business in the next two years, a top official told Reuters in an interview late Thursday.
The real estate firm, which also houses the group’s retail and power businesses, expects lease rentals of Rs10 billion from two of its properties under development in Mumbai by the end of the next financial year, Gagan Banga, group spokesman said.
Banga, also the Chief Executive Officer of Indiabulls Financials Services Ltd, said the finance firm plans to launch its first mutual fund scheme by October.
“The Indiabulls group plans to focus on agri-based spot trading for its proposed commodity exchange, which is awaiting approval from the commodities market regulator,” Banga said.
Currently, all the three commodity exchanges only offer trading in futures.   [[News No 4.]]RPG Group company Spencer’s Retail said on 9 May it will invest Rs1,500 crore to open around 250 new retail outlets across the country within a year.
“We will invest Rs1,500 crore across different formats in the next 12 months to open additional 250 stores. The total retail space will go up to 22.5 lakh sq feet by March 2009,” RPG enterprises vice-chairman Sanjeev Goenka told reporters while announcing the launch of two new hyper stores at Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.
The company is also holding talks with number of international retail players for setting up joint ventures in the country.
Without divulging the names of international players with whom the company is in talks with, Goenka said, “We are looking at international tie ups across various categories and in the next six months a number of joint ventures will be announced.”
At present, the company operates 400 stores across 65 cities in India under different formats such as Supermarket, Hypermarket, Express and Dailies.
Spencer’s Retail is targeting a turnover of Rs1,800 crore by the end of current financial year.    [[News No 5.]]Domestic pig iron maker Tata Metaliks is planning to invest around Rs1,000 crore to build a 0.8 million tonne plant for manufacturing long products in Karnataka and has begun scouting for land in the state.
“On an invitation from the Karnataka Udyog Mitra, Tata Metaliks is seeking to establish a 0.8 MT plant in the state at an estimated investment of about Rs1,000 crore,” a company official told PTI.
The company would require assured iron ore linkage for the proposed plant and land area of about 500 acres. “The state government has indicated to us that it will take care of our raw material needs and we feel encouraged,” he said.
Tata Metaliks was planning to zero in on the site near the iron ore bearing areas of Karnataka and near railway network with adequate water supply.
However, the company’s top brass is likely to take another 3-4 months to finalise the blueprint for the plant.
Tata Metaliks Ltd was incorporated in 1990 and began its commercial production in 1994. It is engaged in the business of manufacturing and selling pig iron and its plants in Kharagpur (West Bengal) and Redi (Maharashtra), have captive power plants.
“The opportunities being explored by the company are further expansion of pig iron business, forward integration into castings (including conversion through partner foundries) and steel, both through greenfield projects as well as merger and acquisition,” he added.
