[[News No 1.]]Benchmark share indices ended nearly 2% down on Wednesday after the rupee fell to an all-time low while the political uncertainty in Greece also dampened investor sentiment.

The Sensex provisionally ended down 296 points or 1.8% at 16,032 and the Nifty ended down 83 points or 1.7% at 4,859.    [[News No 2.]]The rupee hit a record low against the dollar on Wednesday as risk aversion in global markets added pressure on a currency already under fire from fiscal and current account deficits that are weighing on growth.

Repeated currency intervention by the central bank and a rash of other measures targeting deposits and exporters have failed to stem the slide in the currency, the worst performing emerging Asian currency by far since March.

The rupee dropped as low as 54.46 per dollar, breaching its previous record low of 54.30 in December. It was last trading at 54.34/36 compared to a close of 53.79.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will continue to face a losing battle in trying to check the rupees fall, analysts say.

The downturn in global markets raises the prospect of capital outflows when India needs inflows to shore up its balance of payments, which slipped into the red in the December quarter for the first time in three years.

Stalled policymaking in government ahead of general elections due by 2014 are also playing a key role in undermining confidence in the currency.

Frequent currency intervention by the central bank would further sap rupee liquidity from the economy at a time when the country is facing a severe cash crunch in its banking system, analysts said.

Unfortunately for the rupee, this is not a great environment to run a current account deficit and thus be reliant on capital inflows from foreign lenders, said Sean Callow, a senior currency strategist at Westpac Banking Corp in Sydney.

I suspect only radical steps by RBI - or sudden action by foreign central banks and/or G20 - will stop a push through 55 and quite possible higher, he said, referring to the dollar/rupee exchange rate.   [[News No 3.]] Coal India has so far entered into pacts with 14 power plants for the supply of fossil fuel, while some have refused to sign it due to their objections on some of the clauses of the model fuel supply agreement.

Till now 14 power units have entered into fuel supply pact with Coal India (CIL). The last unit with which the PSU has signed FSA is CESC, a source close to the development said.

The development follows power ministry seeking the intervention of the Prime Ministers Office to resolve issues related to CILs new fuel supply agreement.

Most of the power producers have reservations about certain clauses, including those related to penalty, in the revised Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) put forward by CIL.

Power producer NTPC is among the companies that have refused to sign FSA.

So far other power firms with which CIL has entered into pacts includes Reliance Powers Rosa Power project, Lanco Anpara Power and Bajaj Hindustan.

Last month, the government had issued a directive to CIL to commit a minimum of 80 per cent of fuel supply to power producers, failing which it would attract penalty.

The directive was issued following a meeting between the power sector honchos and the Prime Ministers Office.

On any timeline for the Maharatna firm to sign FSAs with all the 48 power units, a source with CIL had earlier said: "It is difficult to give a time frame as CIL is signing pacts as and when the power companies are coming forward.   [[News No 4.]]Reliance Industries has reported that natural gas production from its eastern offshore KG-D6 fields has dropped to about 32.66 million standard cubic meters per day.

Gas output from KG-D6 in the week ended May 6 dropped to 32.66 mmscmd from 33.89 mmscmd in April, according to a status report filed by the company with the Oil Ministry.

KG-D6, where water and sand ingress coupled with drop in pressure has led a drastic fall in per-well output, had produced 34.62 mmscmd in the beginning of March.

Production from Dhirubhai-1 and 3, the largest among the 19 oil and gas finds RIL has made in the KG-DWN-98/3 or KG-D6 block, slipped to 26.51 mmscmd during April 30 to May 6.

Together with 6.15 mmscmd output from MA oilfield in the same block, KG-D6 produced 32.66 mmsmcd during the week ending May 6.

The KG-D6 output has fallen since hitting peak of 61.5 mmscmd in March 2010 as RIL shut wells after water and sand ingress.

During the week under review, a total of 12 wells were on production and 6 wells (A2, A6, A10, B1, B2 & B13) were kept closed due to high water cut/sanding issues, the report said.

The output from KG-D6 is short of the 70.39 mmscmd-level (61.88 mmscmd from D1 and D3 and 8.5 mmscmd from the MA field) envisaged as per the field development plan approved in 2006.

While Reliance holds 60% interest in KG-D6, UKs BP Plc holds 30% and Niko Resources of Canada the remaining 10%.

The report said two out of the six wells on MA field had to be shut due to water loading. The field produced an average of 9,759 barrels per day of oil in the week and 1,759 barrels per day of condensate.

Of the 32.66 mmscmd of production, 14.38 mmscmd was sold to fertiliser plants at government approved rate of USD 4.20 per million British thermal unit. Another 15.01 mmscmd was sold to power plants and the remaining 3.27 mmscmd was consumed by sectors such as LPG.
